Digital Scribbles Max Episode 11 now available

Next up is Digital Scribbles Max Episode 12, as we take a break from Doctor Who and look at Marvel Vs. DC past with past reviews of Batman versus Daredevil, versus Punisher, versus Hulk versus Spider-Man... oh and one Superman versus Spider-Man... because. Stay tuned.

Summer 2013 Day 17 : June Mini Reviews are Ready

Actually I set aside a bit, for the rest of the year... but I want to put a bit more content in then start posting mini reviews... which I finally started today, rotating each review from the 70s and 80s, 90s and 2000s. Stay tuned for more reviews coming up.

80's Mini Review : Adventures of Superman #441

Adventures of Superman #441
June 1988
Publisher - DC Comics
John Byrne & Jerry Ordway - Script, Penciller, Co Plotter
Dennis Janke - Inker
Anthony Tollin - Colorist
Albert Deguzman - Letterer
Renee Witterstaetter - Assistant Editor
Mike Carlin - Editor

Probably a good time to bring up the mischievous little imp from the 5th Dimension, the one with the hard to remember how to spell name Mxyzptlk... I'm calling him Mixxy for short... ever since the 18 issue magic mushroom mind trip that was Action Comics in the New 52. This will be far easier to grasp, I assure you.

In "The Tiny Terror of Tinseltown" Superman finds himself fighting a large burger wielding singing corporate shill for Big Belly Burgers in Hollywood, under the watchful gaze of Mixxy floating above a freshly altered Hollywood sign sign changed to read as Mixxy' s name.... hmmm... burgers... anyway after smashing belly boy Superman makes quick work tricking Mixxy into saying his name backwards, rearranging the Mixxy sign to say Mixxy' s name backwards.

But since Mixxy only stays away for 90 days he bounces back quickly... by not leaving. Yeah, apparently sick of the whole backwards name gag Mixxy has decided to change the rules... right after we watch a page of Cat Grant back in Metropolis basically being called a cougar by her eventually killed by crazy Toyman kid Adam... you think this Toyman May never see the light of day again, but the New 52 did just turn Vandal Savage into a serial killer so... nah. Then there is a page with Lois, then back to Superman and Mixxy... who can't seem to make his mind up on his new weakness... until 7 pages later when he tries to smother Superman in Smurfs, until he's inspired to challenge Superman to trick him to paint his face blue... don't get used to this, he drops it almost immediately after this issue.

Sigh. Then we have a page with terrible Brainiac, not Supergirl Supergirl, and Mr blow up LexCorps holdings shadowy guy before getting back to Superman... who only takes 5 pages to make Mixxy leave in a huff... then an alien ship arrives near Jupiter and we're done.

Bleach. Not one of my favorite Mixxy tales, the issue is a bit distracted with several stories going on at once, and when we do see the Mixxy stuff it is short and pointless with a pointless change to Mixxy that might as well never happened as it doesn't stick as far as I know. And for the record? This iteration of Supergirl doesn't interest me none. A 2 out of 5.

Next 80's look?
Remember when Checkmate had its own Prestige format title? Here, let's remember it together. Checkmate #1-#3.

Summer 2013 Day 7 : Progress Is Underway... Somehow.

Progress Is about to happen. The laptop is on its way and hopefully within days I am grinding out podcasts again full speed ahead. That would be good. Anyway with that said by next week this time I should be grinding out fresh podcast content.

Trading? Not so much progress. Apparently I am in the middle of a trade with an individual... who knows nothing of digital comic gifting. Sure, this is a topic for RKYV Revue since no doubt it will involve New content, but still... wow. I just learned about gifting digital comics myself from Comixology, and really it wasn't that hard to learn let me tell you. Maybe he is just... cheap. Probably that.

So as the first week of Summer 2013 rolls to a close lots of progress is made, a nd even more can be accomplished once the laptop is in so stay tuned for updates... and me sitting down this weekend to write a few mini reviews. Stay tuned.

Summer 2013 Day 3 : Memorial Day

Well it's Memorial Day. Not leaving the house today since there is no shuttles on holidays. There is not many days this happens, but it happens.

The big wait, on the laptop, continues. Probably would feel a whole lot better about it if the guy I am trading with hasn't been missing for a week so far but the last large flat only just arrived... half a week ago... yeah, I will be fixating on this for awhile... go figure.

The sooner that is done the sooner I can get back to doing podcasts full time, sometime that s presently on hold. But while I wait let's see...

Got a lot of DC Comics stuff to review for This Old DC Swag. A bit of content for This Old Comic Addict including more Spider-Man stuff. Reviewing DC, MARVEL, the Ultraverse, Valiant, etc... just need that laptop.

On a seperate note once I solidify my work budget I will add digital back to old school reviews... that is another thing hanging in limbo, my summer or fall work budget, joy. To remedy that I am working on getting a new review job, progress reports to come as I submit to different possible employers.

I can't think of much right now, Memorial Day and all, but first priority here (which I need to do this week) is lay out my plans for all the retro casts, and what I will be reviewing for each. That is something I will be doing with this week's updates. Stay tuned.

Summer 2013 Day -1 : Start of Summer

Well the summer for me starts after tomorrow, so rotating throughout my blogs will be a daily post related to work going on during the summer as related to each blog in question.

For Comic Addict, and several other blogs, it is watching the box for the last big trade before summer, and the laptop I plan to use to kick start the podcasts back into full production. It is the last trade... and no updates yet. I finished my end but still no updates. Oh well. Hopefully that changes soon. Stay tuned for updates.

Otherwise I am waiting on getting This Old Comic Addict and This Old DC Swag going once again soon. Got LOTS to review, just need to get to reviewing it.

Oh, mini reviews coming soon here, stay tuned.

First Impression : Superman Sunday Classics 1939-1943

It is the 75th Anniversary of Superman so, logically, everyone EXCEPT DC Comics is celebrating it. DC Comics is... trying to make Superman young again...again. But forgetting forgetting DC Comics insecurities with age age we got ourselves a blast from the Golden Age with Superman Sunday Classics 1939-1943 (collecting the color sunday strips which had their own stories seperate from the dailies which are collected in their own book).

Ah. Golden Age Superman, a title that reminds you of a far simpler time when the Man of Steel randomly spawned new powers powers and abilities at random for plot convenience, threatens people and property for effect and randomly killed bad guys without warning. Throwing them into the sky Team Rocket style, letting enemy fire blow them up and what not. Clearly the whole Superman as the world`s biggest boy scout does not originate from the Golden Age.

Presently reviewing it, will have it out soon, but right now I think you will enjoy this if you are a fan of the Golden Age. Stay tuned.

Getting back on track

I have lots to get back on track with, and not just here, I also have a lot of content to work on for the other blogs too... but one step at a time.

Working on acquiring a used laptop for working on the podcasts.

Looking for another reviewing job online while I wait for word from Mr. Pare.

Trying to figure out why I haven't received a issue of my subscription to Supergirl yet.

And of course daily content needs to be worked on. Lots to do so I am off to work on it all. Stay tuned for updates.

Daily News IDW Editoin
KISS KIDS Coming Fall 2013

Personally I blame Jim Henson. Check out the cut (with safety scissors) and paste (with non toxic glue) info below.

Ah, the simple pleasures of just being a kid. Lemonade stands, little league games, advanced fort building, rocking the faces off of millions of screaming fans all over the world while thwarting the plans of your evil school Principal.

If a couple of those cherished childhood memories sound unfamiliar, that’s because they can only be found in KISS Kids, the new series starring the pint-sized rock gods! Join Starchild, Li’l Demon, Spacey, and Catkid as they get into trouble and kick out the jams in strips featuring familiar characters and settings from KISS lore. Helmed by KISS series writers Chris Ryall and Tom Waltz with fun, expressive art by Jose Holder (Mars Attacks The Real Ghostbusters), KISS Kids promises to be a treat for fans of all-ages!

“KISS is used to rocking and rolling all night and partying every day, but back when they were little’uns, those things only happened around nap time,” said Chris Ryall, also IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “This series will appeal to kids and Kiss fans of all ages, as we see the school-age band engage robots, evil teachers, other students, and much more, all filtered through the KISS lens. Beth, the school’s Doctor Love, the snooty Torpedo Girls, the bratty “Wicked” Lester, nefarious Principal Elder… they’re all here for this accessible, funny, and appealing new series.”

The new KISS Kids series, coming this fall, is being previewed in the form of a one-page strip on the back cover of all four issues of this spring’s Kiss Solo series. Fans will get their first real look at theKiss Kids on April 10, when Kiss Solo #1: The Demon by Ryall and artist Angel Medina is released.

"Rock and Roll All Nite….and Potty Every Day," added the L’il Demon himself, Kiss founding member,Gene Simmons.

This fall, there’s only one place for proof positive that whether you’re a Starchild or a Demon, there’s nothing better than rocking and rolling all night and reading comics every day!

If you told me to get hyped about this BEFORE I learned about Teen Titans Go replacing Young Justice? Well.... maybe. But not now. I'm burned out on kidified versions of just about anything. Go figure. But if you want to check it out? Please do. I think I will get the digitial #1 in the Fall and review it, so stay tuned for a review in the future.

That New 52 Smell : First Unpacking Update

That New 52 Smell
The First Unpacking

Six weeks later and the first subscription issue finally arrived. My first review issue... and subsequently I finally had a few questions answered.

- Subscription issues start mailing after six weeks HOWEVER that only means they mail on the week they come out... which may mean it might take extra weeks for some first issues to mail.

- Oh yes, they seemingly come out a month behind. Its April... and I got March's issue.

- And they mail one issue at a time. That's good. Means I dont have to wait two months between reviews... I dont know why I was even worried about that. Really.

So April is going to be a slow month. This episode coming? Superman Issue No 18, featuring fallout from H'el on Earth, the realization the artwork reminds me of manga artwork which reminds me of the time Superman was drawn that way for a time in the 90's as a sales gimmick... and the threat of Hector Hammond, the new 52s worst ever evil bobble headed human... I mean wow! Just look at the size of his head! Sheesh... oh, and that is only the tip of the iceberg in this first ever New 52 Superman review.

After that? Waiting on Supergirl to come in. Hopefully not too long of a wait.

May is a little busier. Besides the second issues of Supergirl and Superman we also get the first issues of Action Comics and Teen Titans, doubling the monthly reviews to four.

For all intents and purposes it looks like a major trade will be resolved. So that means June and probably July will see the last of the first year content rolling in, setting the pace of the series in 2013 to 2014..

It took awhile, but we are finally ready to get That New 52 Smell rolling full speed ahead. And that can only be a good thing.

So how will we close up the first year of content? Good question... I am still fudging abit on the end admittedly. That is still abit up in the air.

Wonder Woman is still on the list most certainly, that is scheduled, but how to end? Hmm... I was thinking of several possible scenarios... my mind is basically stuck at this point, at a indecision moment, and while there is a bit of time left to resolve it... that time is running out so... what to end with. That I will save for an upcoming update.

So right now we will focus on upcoming episodes.

- Supergirl episode
While I am hoping that we will see the first issue arrive today (April 20th)... it might not. So first issue coverage coming soon.

There is also the digital content, but that is a topic of another update... stay tuned.

Evil Is All Thumb... prints?

Apparently evil is all thumbprint or something... I don't know. Have you some cut and paste for more info!

IDW is pleased to announce a new project from the Eisner-nominated writing team behind The CapeJoe Hill and Jason Ciaramella. Based on Hill’s original novella and featuring covers and art by superstar newcomer Vic MalhotraTHUMBPRINT is a twisted three-issue tale of fear, terror, and indelible remorse.

When Private Mallory Grennan is dishonorably discharged from the US Army, she hopes to start a new life back home, far away from the things she’d seen and done in Abu Ghraib prison. Mal’s crimes, committed beneath a harsh Arabian sun, throw a shadow long enough to reach all the way to the United States. What started there, will end here – in blood. Over THUMBPRINT’s three gripping issues, fans will truly feel what it’s like to be haunted… and hunted.

"Bringing THUMBPRINT to life was a challenge for me,” said writerJason Ciaramella. “Not because the prose was particularly difficult to adapt, but because the themes the story explores are haunting, and deeply disturbing. I had to step out of myself in order to capture the true horror of it without letting my personal agendas seep in."

Author Joe Hill adds, “I was blown away by Jason’s work on The Cape, and wanted more.THUMBPRINT is right in his wheelhouse: Jay has a feel for the psychological flaws that lead a basically good person down the wrong path. And no one writes action quite like Jay – he turns brutality into surreal comedy and back again faster than a magician turning a scarf into a dove. Add to that an opportunity to work with an artist like Vic Malhotra – who draws with a severe grace, and brings to mind the work Mazzucchelli was doing in Batman: Year One – and I think we’ve got all the ingredients for something that can really explode off the page.”

The first issue will also feature a variant cover by Vincent Chong, the award-winning artist of theTHUMBPRINT novella. When THUMBPRINT hits stands this June, fans of the Eisner-winning Locke & Key can expect another in the long line of haunting thrills concocted by Hill and Ciaramella.

JOE HILL'S THUMBPRINT #1 of 3: (FC, 32 pages, $3.99). In stores 6/19/13.

Let's see about getting back to a daily update a day, huh? That'd be good.

That New 52 Smell - First Unpacking Minus 5 and Digital 52?

Well as of today (April 4th) we are almost to the six week mark for the first two 52 titles for the cast, Supergirl and Superman, depending on when the first issues finally show up in the boxy box. So waiting on that before... oh wait, my stupid MP3 Player I was recording on is broken screen wise... at long last... meaning I have to do the casts another way. Sigh. What a bother. Well while I work on that I have an update in another vein, possibly reintergrating digital content for reviews.

I am finally going to, this year's tech add on, add a tablet for review purposes of digital comics. Odds are I am going to add the Kindle Fire, and probably make Comixology my home for digital... but that is in a future update. Stay tuned.

Another add should be in the handheld dept, but that's for the RPG blog. Stay tuned.

Hmm... short updates. So waiting on the first unpacking and I will update when it shows up.

FYI : Live Recap of Upcoming Podcasts

Usuallty I just write this out in advance and cut and paste the update, but today we are waiting on boxes and packages that will mean new episodes.... well, TWO new episodes anyway... so while we wait on the long slow ship from California for two "packages" and the plane with the one package of TPBs let's recap what we are waiting on...

OMGComics Episode 1
This one we're unpacking the package of TPBs for this one, even though maybe only so much content will be actually used for this one seeing how I am cutting off the date from 2010 to present review wise so... I have very little in that range... really. Maybe I need to expand to 2001... anyway the TPB unpacking will have hopefully new stuff for this cast, even if I have to crank it back abit year wise... should be in the box today, said so on the it should be here today thing on the USPS site... sigh.

This Old Comic Addict Episode 2
This one we're unpacking two... packages... I'm guessing box like things considering the amount that is coming in but we'll see... anyway lots of content from Valiant, the Malibu Ultraverse and MARVEL here to go over... when the two packages ever arrive. I mean it left the East Coast on March 5th, was supposed to be here March 20th and... it is still between California and here... maybe it's still on the boat. Stay tuned.

Other casts awaiting things
That New 52 Smell
Subscription resolution finally happening in a few days... for maybe 10-20% of the review content... well, I didn't say it would be a dramatic resolution but it pushes the series forward ever so slightly.

20% more should be resolved by May, and another 20% by June so... hmmm... that leaves 20-30% to resolve which will all be done by June... like I said, not too exciting but it will mean a full show every week or two of content to review.

So far first Phase, the Super Phase, is moving along OK and this week's resolution will make a major mark on this. The second phase, to be announced, will be announced in April.

As for the first unpacking and review? Still waiting on it. And yes... DC Comics never responded to my email about my question about subscriptions... sigh... I guess I can send another email and see what happens... poke and prod them enough and maybe somebody will cry out "WE DON'T LIKE PEOPLE!!" and then that's it... wow... that's kinda sad and pathethic if you think about it. Sigh.

Well that's it for my live typing. Later on today I will live type content on RKYV Revue, stay tuned (as hopefully that will contain updates). See you!

That New 52 Smell Episode Zero now available

That New 52 Smell Episode Zero is now out and available! Four more episodes left to The New 52 Adventures of Superman and already I am launching That New 62 Smell... go figure.

Introduction statement, DC Comics and me public relations wise, Orson Scott Card controversy with Adventures of Superman... and for context? Another DC Comics character with issues Orson Scott Card can relate to, mainly Corrigan aka The Spectre and his long lamenting over his stance on the topic from the mid 90's! Check it out as I review the issue in question!

New episode in two weeks with hopefully our first New 62 DC review... and a very Spectre Christmas!

TOCA Journal 1 : That Unboxing Episodes

TOCA Journal - Waiting for Something Man

These days alot of my podcasts seems to rotate around the concept of... waiting.

And not just That New 52 Smell either in terms of subscriptions made or in negotiation. I also mean waiting for trades for This Old Comic Addict, or even This Old DC Swag... and even for Pocket Gamer.

Yup. Waiting to exhale, and do unboxing episodes, is universal. Boring and universal.

The longest wait is for two boxes sent for a giant trade. The unboxing of these two? Most definitely an episode of This Old Comic Addict will revolve around the unboxing. But really. It was sent via ground, and the longest part is the long ship trip between California and Hawaii... still it is almost here, so recording shortly.

Another trade, another opening episode for This Old Comic Addict. Not nearly quite as massive as what I am expecting in the first trade, yes, but still vitally important. This trade will provide fresh review content for my RKYV reviews, being fresher stuff. Timing wise this will probably arrive on a weekend I usually record an episode of This Old Comic Addict so that works out well for me.

But moving things is not just for This Old Comic Addict. Skipped a week of Waiting To Recharge over at http://www.rpgunite.blogspot.com  because I didnt have much to report on... this week I should have abit to say in that regard.

Finishing a trade for subscriptions for That New 52 Smell... still hoping for a positive outcome. Stay tuned.

So... anything else? Nothing to report on for now, but all of this does bring up the topic of unboxing episodes... who gets them.

Top of the list is This Old Comic Addict, and This Old DC Swag, two series that dig into the past is full of potential for unboxing episodes now and then.

I thought we would do more unboxing for a newer cast not That New 52 Smell... maybe we still could do that. Once I am of a higher level as a reviewer.

Finally less unboxing and more unveiling everytime a new subscription issue arrives. Something that will become more and more commonplace as the review titles all fall into place one by one. Still I wonder if, over time, we might not also see a more traditional unboxing of review content over time, and the advent of donations or... heaven forbid... finally meeting DC Comics criteria as a reviewer worthy of access.

Hmm... I think I will keep track every weekend of incoming trades and potential donations for unboxing episodes... starting next week. So stay tuned!

Daily News : IDW Edition

Transformers : Monstrosity is here in digital comic format!

Have you some cut and paste about this new Transformers series you can check out from your favorite source for digital comics (which mine used to be the PlayStation Store... before they killed it outright and stopped doing it altogether... thanks Sony... now gimme the money you owe me for all the stuff I purchased that you killed!)

"Hot on the heels of TRANSFORMERS: AUTOCRACY, IDW Publishing is pleased to bring fans of the fierce Cybertronians a sequel with TRANSFORMERS: MONSTROSITY! The twelve-chapter, digital-first series, from the veteran creative team of writers Chris Metzen and Flint Dille and interior and cover artist Livio Ramondelli, is packed with the explosive robot action that made the first series a roaring critical, commercial, and fan success.

Taking place in the early days of the legendary War for Cybertron, MONSTROSITY tells the story of two battle-hardened commanders: OPTIMUS PRIME of the virtuous AUTOBOTS, and MEGATRON of the villainous DECEPTICONS. Tensions are high as both sides carve out their next stands in the battle for Cybertronian supremacy. Which side will gain the edge? Whose resolve will crumble? And what terrible secrets lay in store for our embattled heroes?

“MEGATRON’S been betrayed,” says editor John Barber, “and he finds himself starting a quest that takes him to some very familiar places—but thanks to Chris, Flint, and Livio, the familiar is made new again! And while MEGATRON is rebuilding his life, GRIMLOCK is butting heads with OPTIMUS PRIME, and leading his renegade DINOBOTS away from the darkest secret of their lives.”

There’s only one way to answer all these questions and more, and that’s by picking up TRANSFORMERS: MONSTROSITY #1 via the Transformers Comics and IDW Comics apps, Comics by comiXology, the iBookstore, or online at read.idwpublishing.com."

That New 52 Smell : The Sound of DC Comics... Not Talking...

That New 52 Smell Update
"Ask DC Comics... quietly..."

The work to get ready for That New 52 Smell rolls ever forward. Slowly but surely, one step at a time ahead we go. 20% of subscriptions is set... but a decided error on my part is slowing up another 20%... and quite frankly I will be lucky if I at least lock in 10% at the end of this trade.

20% set for April, 20% set for May and hopefully the last 30% along the way... so a complete schedule by June. Maybe 7 episodes in by the time we are at 100%. That means things will be a bit slow at the start, taking a few episodes to get fully rolling full speed ahead as we pass Memorial Day and roll into summer... but still with Episode 1 about to be recorded I still need content. And we do have abit to talk about... yes, even with only 20% of titles "secured" and all while I wait for the first issues to arrive in the mail we do still have abit to talk about... surprise!

Introduction to the series, and the whole plan of review by subscriptions. DC ending Green Lantern and Young Justice, and the coming of Beware the Batman. The whole Orson Scott Card thing on Adventures of Superman. Just in Episode 1 alone. But this is just the start... hmmm... well I am curious. When I am subscribed to a DC Comics title how long does it take before you get your first issue? Sure, over time I will learn this by comparison as each title rolls in... but I couldnt help but ask DC Comics myself. But not as a reviewer, just a simple question with no strings attached. Pretty simple, right? Well, I asked this yesterday and waited for a reply, and waited. Days passed and nothing.

Well as I said a few times past back in Early February I contacted DC Comics as part of a batch of publishers I contacted with questions concerning reviewer policy. They never contacted me. To me I felt this meant I had more growing to do as a reviewer. Work harder, grow as a reviewer and one day I will be mature enough. With hard work and determination it will be possible.

But to not even answer a simple question? What. I dread to say it but I can easily see the worst in this. Maybe I just shouldn't ask DC Comics any questions period. I dont know, but for some reason I think DC Comics has me on a spam or block list if even the simplest emails go unanswered. Anyway because of that I might do an Ask DC Comics section, if only to point out how DC alienates me. Maybe I will also do a Why I dont work at Superman Homepage section... spoiler alert... I tried finding a home there once!

As we wrap up the update the subscription plan... is moving even slower after one vital lynchpin... Ugh. Dont want to think about it. At least 20% progress has been made so... hopefully I will be at 40% at the end of March... 30% at least. See you next update, as I cast Episode 1 this weekend and get the cast off the ground. That will be the focus of the next update. Stay tuned... now I am off to record Episode 1... hopefully... see you next update.

Start of the Week March 11th

Start of the Week
March 11th

Start of a brand new week so let's see what is happening.

Postal Progress Report
Seeing how a few podcasts depend on what is incoming lets see what we are looking forward to this week.

Random Comic Boxes
Well not so much random as a smathering of different companies, this is the fuel for This Old Comic Addict. So... are we making progress? As of last Saturday it reached the West Coast so... its making progress! Yay!

That New 52 Smell Update
Well splitting the work up into three months should insure that the full 10 review load is secured, and as of this trade March's trade schedule is wrapping up... knock on wood.

The trade has quite abit to go in order to insure everything is on the up and up, but with any good fortune the trade is making progress... and reaches fulfillment before the end of the month completeing March's schedule and filling 40% of the pickups.

Well... one step at a time. Stay tuned.

There is one more trade but it provides review material to my work with RKYV Online... once it publishes and I am cranking out material for it full throttle... I am honestly stymied though. I thought the title would be rolling apace by now, but over a month has passed and so far I am rather... well, at a loss. I am ready to grind out fresh content. Just waiting for the next deadlines to begin submitting in earnest. Oh well, stay tuned.

Well we talked about podcast progress... how about progress on a upcoming review topic?

Looking to do The Red Star review
And I almost got it all! Finding my copy of the first Trade Paperback helped loads, but I am still short a few issues! I am looking to trade for the following, my list of comics I am trading with is up at www.ihaveplanet.com.

The Red Star (Image)
Issue 6 & 7.5

The Red Star (Archangel)
Volume II Issue 3 & 4

Will also trade for the second and third TPB if need to.

Well as I write this up it's actually Sunday (a day early) so I should go grind out a few podcasts for the weekend and see you next update. Bye!

Transformers : Art of the Fall of Cybertron Limited coming!

Got oodles of money that you just don't know what to do with, and your a big Transformers fan?
Can I have some?
Anyway IDW has a new expensive limited to talk about so let's go right to the cut and paste!

IDW Limited announced its plan today to offer a deluxe limited edition of TRANSFORMERS: Art of the Fall of Cybertron. Based on the TRANSFORMERS brand from Hasbro, the book is a collection of the art and set descriptions for the smash-hit videogame of the same name, produced by High Moon Studios and published by Activision. The limited-edition book will be offered in a special IDW Red Label edition complete with slipcase, new cover and a portfolio of 10 limited-edition lithographs. (http://idwlimited.com/series/transformers/transformers-art-of-the-fall-of-cybertron-red-label.html)

“Fans of the comics and of the games should be able to come together over this book. It’s got absolutely breathtaking art paired with backstory and details that will really help immerse you into Cybertron and the two factions at war there,” says John Barber, IDW TRANSFORMERS editor and writer. “This is the kind of book you display on your coffee table and keep coming back to. You can easily lose an afternoon (or several) admiring the detailed work seen here.”

This edition of TRANSFORMERS: Art of the Fall of Cybertron will be presented in an exclusive to IDW Limited cover and housed in a custom-built slipcase featuring unique art elements. Limited to only 250 copies, each book will include a special hardcover portfolio containing 10 limited-edition lithographs.

Art of the Fall of Cybertron chronicles the development of the sequel to 2010’s TRANSFORMERS: War for Cybertron by High Moon Studios. The game was an award-winning success, portraying the world of the TRANSFORMERS in a way that hadn’t been done in previous adaptations, and the sequel built upon that success to reach even greater heights.

This title is the second limited-edition TRANSFORMERS release from IDW Limited and comes on the heels of their TRANSFORMERS: The IDW Collection (Vol. 1), a book that experienced almost instant sell-outs in both Blue and Black Label categories. Autobot fans and Decepticon enthusiasts will have plenty more to covet in the coming months as well.

TRANSFORMERS: ART OF THE FALL OF CYBERTRON DELUXE LIMITED EDITION (RED-$100.00; 200 pages; 9” x 12”; hardcover) is now available for pre-order."

You know, if you have $100 lying around to spare... seriously it's like IDW doesn't even know America is still trying to recover from the recession, which might be hampered if people lose their jobs to sequester... thanks Republicans, who needs terrorists when we have YOU to terrorize us. Losers.

Daily News IDW Edition

IDW Teams Up With Cartoon Network!... yay?

Well... somebody had to, really, they are not going to be making new friends over at DC Comics (the last company to publish their stuff) with axing Young Justice and Green Lantern so, well, there you go. And yes, I doubt this was the reason why they did that lest they would have completely cancelled DC Nation and said this Fall it's... I don't know... IDW Kids on DC Nation's old time slot or something. I still think it's content that killed it but we'll see. Anyway... here's some cut and paste, enjoy!

"IDW Publishing and Cartoon Network Enterprises today announced that the two companies have forged a partnership to produce and release comics based on many of the network’s popular and iconic classic characters!

“Many of these Cartoon Network shows have only grown in popularity since they originally aired,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and we’re excited to be able to offer new iterations of the characters in comic-book form alongside both our planned reprint material and also some new animated ventures Cartoon Network has planned, too. There’s a wealth of fun properties to play with here, and we’ve already got some unique things in mind for them.”

Beginning in 2013, fans can look forward to seeing the returns of beloved characters from classic Cartoon Network shows including THE POWERPUFF GIRLS, BEN 10, DEXTER'S LABORATORY, SAMURAI JACK, JOHNNY BRAVO, GENERATOR REX, and many more.

Not only will IDW be teaming with high-caliber creators from the world of comics to publish new adventures featuring tons of Cartoon Network’s characters, but fans can also look forward to a variety of reprints of previous incarnations of Cartoon Network comics.

“We are excited to partner with IDW to bring some of our most beloved and iconic brands and characters to life for fans of all ages,” said Pete Yoder, Vice President of Consumer Products, North America for Cartoon Network Enterprises. “It will be a great opportunity to revisit and expand many of these great stories told in comic-book form, and we’re excited to see what the creative team at IDW comes up with.”

While details have yet to be announced on the specific titles and creative teams, IDW and Cartoon Network are  thrilled to be heading into 2013 with this new partnership and great new comics hitting comic shops soon!"

Hmph. My sister has a full collection of Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Lab from the old DC Comics era, so Cartoon Network is... hmm... reaching hard here to make a buck. Still I guess we can give it a chance. Stay tuned for updates here eh?

Daily News : Valiant Edition

Daily News : Valiant Edition
And then came... Doctor Mirage!

Well it looks like we are finally up to date as word comes of the first appearance in the modern era Valiant of Doctor Mirage. I have to admit I kinda missed Doctor Mirage's appearance in the 90's era Valiant so this will all be rather new to me... so here you go, take this cut and paste!

"The Associated Press today announced that Dr. Mirage, Valiant's preeminent psychic investigator and supernatural hero, will debut this Wednesday in Shadowman #5 in a new incarnation created by writer Justin Jordan and co-writer/artist Patrick Zircher.

In this new iteration, Dr. Mirage is the stage name of Shan Fong, a one-time television investigator of paranormal phenomena whose unique abilities make her an invaluable asset to police departments around the world. During the upcoming "Darque Reckoning" storyline – beginning on March 6th in Shadowman #5 – Fong steps into the world of Jack Boniface and the Shadowman after discovering that no matter where she goes, the dead only have one thing to say: "Master Darque is coming."

"Since the Summer of Valiant, we've been slowly building towards several key events. You can see the first of these events this April in Harbinger Wars, where Bloodshot and Harbinger collide," Valiant CEO and Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani told the AP. "The return of Dr. Mirage is part of that plan — part of setting the stage. Dr. Mirage is a key piece in the future of the Valiant Universe and the timing of the return, as well as the manner, is no accident."

For more information on Shadowman, X-O Manowar, and the rest of the Valiant Universe, visit Valiant on Twitter, on Facebook, or at ValiantUniverse.com.

Set to become a 21st century cult classic, fans of comics and heavy metal alike will be staggered in the scale of Eternal Descent’s ambitions and the second volume of the cult comic series promises to plunge readers even more deeply into the graphic novel’s dark, multi-faceted world."

FYI - Countdown to That New 52 Smell

FYI
Preparing for DC content

First off lets get the unpleasant stuff out of the way.

DC Comics? They're just not going to respond to me, even after the DC themed podcasts launched. So I just need to plan accordingly.

News? Gathered by me for the New 52 cast.

Interviews? None. Sorry.

Review materials? That is all on me and my burden most certainly.

On the plus side... well I am sure being able to set my own pace, and review schedule is a plus if nothing else... oh well.

OK. Now onto actual progress. Trading for subscriptions is moving slowly apace, and while I do not want to jump ahead of myself until everything is all set up... I think we can at least mention progress.

To date two subscriptions have been put to bed set, Supergirl and Superman, a new trade is just starting that, if successful, add two more subscriptions to the schedule.

After that? April should hopefully see another two titles added for a total of six... so progress is definitely being made. Maybe too much progress, to much by far considering I am not getting so much as the time of day from DC... but I guess that is OK. Realistically a large dose of realistic expectations has to be applied in attempting to contacting a large publisher like DC.

Was the silent treatment expected? In some respects yes, sadly yes. I could stand for a higher profile, a bigger presense, more experience and seniority... or a Scrooge McDuck Money Vault.

Why is it I think only status and money gets a response? In truth even I think its exposure and readership, and I need to work harder to build up my readership. Still would it be such a thing just to send me a form email saying you have insufficient presense. Please build up your readership and observe the 12 to 24 month cooling period before resubmitting. Thank you for your interest, salutations and end email. But I dont even have that to show. It is just my opinion that I am insufficient to meet DC's standards for who has access. Well lets close out on a high note, what may be the final word on the review slate of the cast... ready? Yes voting is still ongoing and we are presently at the 40% mark, but... here is how I am seeing it... yes, this is subject to change.

Superman block
Reviewing Action Comics, Supergirl and Superman. Would have rounded it out with Superboy... if it was a subscription title.

Justice League block
Aquaman, Flash and JLAmerica

Finally Ladies Block with Batgirl, Catwoman and Wonder Woman.

Voting is still pending so stay tuned for updates.

OK things are falling into place but we are just waiting for the first arrivals and off we launch That New 52 Smell, so stay tuned.

See you next week!

Monday, March 4, 2013

Start of the Week

Start of the Week
Well once again another new week is upon us (ugh, woke up in not so cheery disposition but I should be feeling better by noon knock on wood) so lets see what is going on.

So March rolled in and the results of the first wave of publisher contacts is... mixed.

The best results came from IDW without a doubt. Followed by a decidedly sharp decline with Valiant (press releases only) and finally DC and MARVEL and the cold shoulder.

Well, best thing to do is be thankful for what I achieved and work with that. Thank you IDW and Valiant.

New policy on podcasts... comic edition
After abit of thought and reflection, as well as problems securing content, I decided to (strangely enough) take a page from the Republicans Post Office strategy and set a comic cast's schedule a year in advance through subscription. That way content is guaranteed and assured for a year of casts, which I figure is a good thing.

Presently the first cast I am working on with this new policy is That New 52 Smell, working to line up subscriptions prior to casting. As of right now? The first two titles are already subscribed to and set so we are on a roll. As for the next step? Over on the right we have polls up for you to vote on the next four titles that will be covered in That New 52 Smell. Voting ends March 22nd and I will announce the results here after the vote ends... stay tuned!

If this proves successful will I do a Marvel cast? Maybe. As I write this the weekend is upon us, and I should have set up a unique email just for This Old Comic Addict! How are we progressing with titles for That New 52 cast? Lets see...

So far? I scheduled nine slots for review.

- Through a large trade cycle I hope to secure six of the nine titles. We are presently 1/3rd of the way through, Supergirl and Superman on the docket for review.

The next batch? Probably start of April I will have an announcement on that. I have abit of my side of the deal to deliver on first, and you have some titles to vote on. Top two is in the next batch.

- Putting a pair of retro consoles and games up to secure two $34 subscriptions for the cast. Presently things are hopeful on this front... actually I think the trade is on. Hopefully these are secured by the end of the month ordering wise. Actually it looks like things are progressing on this front so I hope to have news of two titles being secured ordering wise by the end of the month.

- And once we make more progress on those two fronts I will ponder the ninth title... but that is consideration for another time.

So all in all That New 52 Smell is off to a hopeful start. Progress report next week so stay tuned.

This week in articles?
This Old Comic Addict takes a look at the comic based on the Legion of Super Heroes animation.

Hopefully we have a Book Em Danno review material update as things roll in, and daily news. Otherwise words up so take care, and keep on reading!

Daily News Valiant Edition

There you go! I thought I would never hear again of affordable $10 softcover TPBs... but here it is! Enjoy some cut and paste while I plan my purchasing future.

"
Valiant is proud to announce that the Shadowman Vol. 1: Birth Rites trade paperback collection will debut on April 24th at just $9.99!

Previously solicited at $14.99, the Shadowman Vol. 1: Birth Rites TPB collects the first four issues of Valiant's best-selling Shadowman series by acclaimed creators Justin Jordan (The Strange Talent of Luther Strode) and Patrick Zircher (Captain America) and joins the rest of Valiant's volume one collections at the special introductory price of $9.99.

"Both fans and retailers have had an enthusiastic response to our $9.99 trade paperback releases. Daily News IDW Edition

Daily News IDW Edition
We're Off To Kill Shakespeare... Again...

No really IDW, I really am not that ticked about multiple iterations of Hamlet that I want to see Shakespeare dead... even if one version was with Mel Gibson... but it seems IDW has a publishing skull of Yorick to grind out against the guy as they're rolling out another mini covering the whole Kill Shakespeare (aka the Kill Bill inspired thing with public domain characters) with this newest iteration... here, have ye the cut and paste-eth while I tell Yorick he needs to hit L&L and pack on some weight... he's so skinny.

"Spurred by the demand of fans from the worlds of comics, theatre and academia, IDW Publishing is proud to announce the return of the acclaimed comic series Kill Shakespeare with the release of KILL SHAKESPEARE: THE TIDE OF BLOOD #1. The new five-issue run, with the original creative team of co-writers Conor McCreery and Anthony Del Col and artist Andy Belanger returning, debuts on February 20th, 2013 in comic book stores across the United States, Canada, and overseas.

Called “gripping, violent and dark fun,” by The New York Times, the original 12-issue series was nominated for a Harvey Award for Best New Series and Joe Shuster Awards for Best Comic Writing. In the new adventure Shakespeare’s greatest heroes (Hamlet, Juliet, Romeo, Othello, Miranda) embark on a journey to a forbidden island to save the world from the deranged “master of books”, Prospero. The island is filled with cannibals, magic and madness – as well as ghosts from the pasts of many characters.

“It’s a dream come true to continue to tell stories in the Kill Shakespeare universe,” said McCreery. “We have such a vast and deep sandbox of characters to play with from Shakespeare and our fans constantly let us know which ones they want to see next. The entire fan response has been overwhelming.”

The series has built a strong following not only in the comic book community but also academia (where numerous scholars have analyzed the creators’ take on Shakespeare) and the theatre world. Shortly after the release of THE TIDE OF BLOOD #1, Chicago’s Strawdog Theatre will be mounting the first multi-week run of Kill Shakespeare: The Live Graphic Novel from March 4-24th, 2013. The show, which combines images from the comic series with live acting, music and sound effects, was produced by a number of theatre companies in 2012 and named the top theatrical experience of the year in Halifax by The Coast.

"I had an awesome time working on the first two volumes of Kill Shakespeare," said series editor Tom Waltz. "Tickling both my literary and action-adventure fancies, Conor, Anthony, and Andy have most definitely given me one of the most satisfying and unique experiences I've had as an editor at IDW Publishing. And, just as the first go-round proved it's hard to kill Shakespeare, well, it's hard to kill a fantastic story concept, too, and I truly believe the best is yet to come from the Kill Shakespeare crew!""

So remember, Kill Shakespeare : Tide of Blood is coming soon... get thee to thy comic shop and tell thy retailer to order an inch thick, this issue he must... then make him laugh by telling him how paranoid the WB is about making super hero movies.

Today's news is abit short but nice all in all. Check it out!

Dateline February 15th 2013
Location : San Diego, CA
Publisher : IDW
Subject : Machine Witches Hardcover

"Having taken the comic book and toy industries by storm, it was only a matter of time until acclaimed artist, designer, and enfant terrible Ashley Wood* snuck his talents into the hallowed walls of one of the world’s foremost fine art galleries.

This past fall, the lauded Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York City hosted Ash’s first fine art show: Machine Sabbath. This May, IDW Publishing is proud to present MACHINE WITCHES, a brand-new retrospective of that very same sold-out show.

The oversized hardcover MACHINE WITCHES book documents the slew of gorgeously expressive paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures exhibited during the show, but also comes loaded with unseen paintings, sketches, and a brand-new interview with Ash.

“Ashley Wood has gone legit! I never thought I’d see the day…” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer and Editor-in-Chief. “…but I’m glad I did. It’s about time the fine art world recognized what we’ve all known for years, and now it’s nice to be able to show everyone what Ash has wrought outside of that stuffy gallery setting.”

This May, you might believe your eyes, but you’ll probably still be a little suspicious.

*Ashley Wood had nothing to do with this description.

MACHINE WITCHES (HC, FC, $14.99, 48 pages, 12” x 12”). In stores 5/29/13

Seriously? A $15 book with a page count of a title a third it's length? Well... why I always go for softcover myself but if your a fan of Hardcover well here you go. Enjoy!

That New 52 Smell Week 1

That New 52 Smell
Episode 0.1 - Origins

Putting thought to life, and coming up with this notion, started with the announcement of the coming end of The New 52 Adventures of Superman.

To me it was logical. DC already had scheduled titles on my pull list, and I was inquiring with them about press releases and such so why not expand it to a podcast?

Admittedly the show started its life as a Superman family centered title... but when I checked the subscriptions list I couldn't find Superboy... huh?

If I was left to my own devices I would quickly fall out of picking up what I need to review. This way I am locked in for a full year of episodes, and just have to renew yearly, making changes to the review format once a year as needed. That and this was made possible through a huge trade I am presently doing.

So let's recap. This series was originally thought up when the announcement came that The New 52 Adventures of Superman was winding down to completion.

So with only 4 episodes of New 52 left? Where are we in terms of progress... let's see...

- Starting off with first two titles, Supergirl and Superman, which speaks of the cast's origin as a New 52 Superman inspired cast.

- Presently soliciting votes for the other four starting slots of the cast. Cast your vote at http://www.thisoldcomicaddict.blogspot.com and http://www.rkyvrevue.blogspot.com

- Plans are to add 3 of the bigger page count title along the way. Action Comics and Justice League (two more nods to New 52 Superman) along with Justice League of America, totaling titles covered to nine.

- Titles being voted on? Aquaman, Batgirl, Catwoman, Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Teen Titans and Wonder Woman.

- Originally I was not going to put Batman or Green Lantern titles up for consideration, but then voting would not had been picking a top four as much as dropping the fifth title.

- Deadline for voting is March 22nd.

That is about that for now. The process of preparing the cast has just begun. Next time I speak of the 800 pound Gorrilla Grodd in the cast, preparing the technical aspect of a news section of the cast... when DC Comics wont give me the time of day.

That is coming next week. So stay tuned, and see you then.

Addendum - Cast Format
One thing I am working on is the exact content of the cast itself. At this early production stage I have the following...

- Opening
- DC News Brief
Whatever news I came across that is fit to print, so to speak.
- Rumor mill
i.e. what the WB is not doing lately.
- Mailbag
Going to open an email just for work.
- Reviews
What came in the mail for review

But that is just the beginning! Stay tuned as I work on this and prepare Episode Zero!

News! Clayton Crain joins the team doing Harbinger Wars #1! Have you some cut and paste now to read all about it!

"Valiant is proud to announce that superstar artist Clayton Crain (X-Force, Carnage) is joining Joshua Dysart, Duane Swierczynski, and Clayton Henry for Harbinger Wars #1 (of 4) – the FIRST ISSUE of Valiant's first family crossover! Arriving in stores on April 3rd, Harbinger Wars #1 is the can't-miss first chapter of the event that will pit Bloodshot and Harbinger against a new generation of superhuman – and each other.

"Clayton Crain is a phenomenal talent and we're extraordinarily happy to have him joining Valiant for Harbinger Wars #1," said Valiant Executive Editor Warren Simons.  "He will be handling a pivotal sequence introducing Generation Zero, the strike force controlled by Project Rising Spirit that inadvertently sets the Harbinger Wars in motion."

For decades, Toyo Harada's Harbinger Foundation and the government's own Project Rising Spirit have been waging a secret war over the rarest resource known to man – the unruly superhuman telekinetics known as Harbingers. Over the years, they've each collected a small army of these empowered children to inflict their agendas on the world. But now, the reformed Harbinger hunter known as Bloodshot needs to atone for his crimes – and he's going to start by releasing two dozen of the most volatile Harbingers from their PRS prison and into the world.

Bloodshot wants to lead them. Toyo Harada wants to control them. And Peter Stancheck, a teenage renegade with immense powers of his own, wants to give them free rein. But the runaway children of PRS have their own ideas for the future...and, as the body count rises, the Valiant Universe will realize that power this immense cannot be contained. It must be exercised. Who will survive the Harbinger Wars?

A 12-issue crossover event from an all-star cast of visionary talent, the defining Valiant Universe storyline of the year begins in Harbinger Wars #1 (of 4). Then the action continues with all-new jumping-on points in Harbinger #11 and Bloodshot #10 – the first issues of new standalone, four-issue story arcs chronicling the fallout of the Valiant Universe's first full-scale superhuman conflict. Spanning 12 issues total, follow the story independently in Harbinger Wars, Harbinger or Bloodshot, or read them all to experience the full scope and intensity of the Harbinger Wars saga!

It all begins on April 3rd in Harbinger Wars #1 (of 4) – written by Joshua Dysart and Duane Swierczynski with art by Clayton Henry and Clayton Crain!

Best of EC Comics Artists' Editions Coming in June

Dateline : February 15th 2013
Location : San Diego, CA
Publisher : IDW
Subject : Best of EC Comics Artists' Editions coming in June!

...OK... I don't know what's going on... yes, I am sadly behind... sorry. Cut and paste!

"IDW Publishing is proud to announce an Artist's Edition like no other—The Best of EC COMICS Artist's Edition, Volume One. This massive book will measure 15" x 22", the same size as both the Wally Wood and MAD Artist's Editions, and will contain stellar works by Al Williamson, Harvey Kurtzman, Bernie Krigstein, Johnny Craig, and others. Additionally, there will be an art gallery of classic covers—including the peerless Weird Science-Fantasy #29 by Frank Frazetta.

"It's no secret that I am a serious EC lover," says Artist's Editions editor Scott Dunbier. "I can honestly say that this volume will feature some of the most beloved and remembered EC stories of all time!”

EC Comics was arguably the greatest publishing entity in the history of comic books. For a five-year stretch in the early 1950s they set the bar higher than ever before, and with a level of consistency unmatched. In the early 1980s the original art for all EC stories was auctioned off and most of these have been buried in collections since that time, rarely being seen by anyone except the original art’s owners.

“Tracking down these treasures is a major undertaking since the stories are widely scattered among multiple collectors, but fortunately we have been able to unearth some of the truly best stories to come out of EC,” says Dunbier.  “The book will present readers with a veritable cornucopia of outstanding examples of true classics.”

What is an Artist’s Edition? Artist’s Editions are printed the same size as the original art. While appearing to be in black & white, each page has been scanned in COLOR to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for example, you are able to clearly see paste-overs, blue pencils in the art, editorial notes, art corrections. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.

Previous Artist’s Editions include DAVE STEVENS’ THE ROCKETEER: ARTIST’S EDITION and WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION, JOHN ROMITA’S THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: ARTIST’S EDITION, WALLY WOOD’S EC STORIES: THE ARTIST’S EDITION, SERGIO ARAGONES’ GROO THE WANDERER: ARTIST’S EDITION, AND DAVID MAZZUCCHELLI’S DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN ARTIST’S EDITION.

The ROCKETEER ARTIST’S EDITION won two Eisner Awards in 2011, for Best Archival Project and Best Design and THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION won the 2012 Eisner Award for Best Archival Project.

THE BEST OF EC COMICS ARTIST’S EDITION, VOLUME 1 (HC, B&W, 160 pgs., $95). In stores 6/19/13.
ISBN: 978-1-61377-650-6"

Well... it's abit expensive... once again holding out for the softcover... but I am interested. I like me some classic stuff. Stay tuned for updates as future volumes are announced!
